On the subject of decolonization

Decolonizing yourself is a process. We can argue on what a White person plays in a lot of processes, but if a person is trying to “sober up” so to speak… the last thing you should do is discourage them from sobering up. A lot of racial critiques are accurate, but you never want to discourage people who belong to the oppressive class from trying to be better (I’m not nuts I know this includes me). You’ve heard of “let them fight?” Okay. Sure. That’s valid. But how about “let them heal?” “Let them put the work in?” “Let them sort this out and talk about it if they have to?” If you expect people to fix themselves sometimes they need the community. *DO* chase bigots out. *DO* chase ingenious “I’m just making a joke” dudes out. Alright. Do that. Do verbally bash the dudes that put “trans” and “woman” in unnecessary quotes in the middle of a conversation about trans rights. But also let people sort things out if they’re trying to be better. Learn when to use a sword and when to use a word. One letter difference but all the world at the same time. I do put myself to this test and I am more harsh than I am kind. But I remind myself to be kind now and then, sometimes there’s a payoff; sometimes not. Don’t be that kid that only knows how to hit one piano note on the entire keyboard. You are in charge of when to show empathy…. but f**king a show it now and then.
